About the Farm

Seeds Farm is a five acre diversified vegetable and animal farm in Northfield, MN, just 30 miles south of the Twin Cities. We are proud to grow ecological and nutrient dense food for our community. We grow vegetables for an 85 member CSA and for wholesale accounts. We also pasture pigs, chickens, and turkeys. Seeds Farm is managed by Becca Carlson, an enthusiastic first generation farmer. OPEN POSITIONS 2015:

Assistant Manager

This position is ideal for the candidate looking for a 2-3 year commitment who is interested in pursuing sustainable farming as a vocation. Past experience on a vegetable farm is necessary for this position. Duties for an assistant farm manager include: managing farm crew, greenhouse, hoophouse, field, tractor, and animal work; harvesting, processing, packaging and delivering vegetables; leading field trips and the farm crew; and addressing the foreseen and unforeseen needs of the vegetables/animals/humans on the farm. The assistant farm manager will work closely with the farm manager on day to day tasks as well as long term planning.

Qualities of an ideal candidate include:

  • responsible, reliable, and honest
  • self-motivated
  • ability to take instructions in addition to managing your own projects
  • ability work in all sorts of weather conditions
  • can perform tasks efficiently while still paying attention to detail and quality
  • ability to multi-task and be flexible with the changing tasks on the farm
  • patience with repetition and/or detailed work
  • good communication skills
  • can effectively lead farm crew
  • has a ‘can do’ attitude
  • experience with machinery is a plus

Learning opportunities

While we are always learning new things/ways/techniques ourselves at the farm, we are more than wiling to share with you what we do know and are willing to help you pursue your own interests while at the farm. The assistant manager has the opportunity to develop their own project under Seeds Farm in their free time if desired, especially in 2nd season. Access to Seeds Farm equipment and infrastructure in addition to support of the staff are available to assist you. We will be happy to share with you what it takes to run a successful farm and business and willing to share our records and books if you are interested.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience, $9-11/hr  This position starts in April and goes through October. Housing is not provided, but we can help you find single or community affordable housing in the area. Farm produce included.

**For the exceptional candidate, potential partnership is a possibility if necessary qualities are demonstrated throughout the season.

Farm Hand

We will be hiring 2-3 farm hands this growing season. No experience is necessary for this position, though enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture is. Duties include working in the greenhouse growing transplants, working on upkeep of farm buildings, weeding vegetables, caring for the pigs, chickens and turkeys, harvesting, washing, and packaging vegetables, and addressing the foreseen and unforeseen needs of the vegetables/animals/humans on the farm. We can help teach you the necessary skills to complete these tasks successfully.

  • responsible, reliable, and honest
  • works well in groups and also motivated to work alone
  • ability work in all sorts of weather conditions
  • can perform tasks efficiently while still paying attention to detail and quality
  • ability to multi-task and be flexible with the changing tasks on the farm
  • patience with repetition and/or detailed work
  • good communication skills
  • has a ‘can do’ attitude

Compensation

Pay for this position is $7.50 plus produce. Housing is not included, but we can help you find single or community affordable housing in the area.
